Two thin coats outlast one thick one, and most manufacturers require two coats for their warranty. The second coat typically stretches further than the first because the surface is already sealed; the calculator's straight multiplication is deliberately a little conservative, which on sealer is the right side to miss on, since a partial second pail means a visible seam line where you stopped.

Sealer types and what they suit

Refined coal tar sealers have historically been the most durable option for asphalt, resisting oil and gasoline well and lasting three to five years. They are also increasingly restricted: a number of states and municipalities have banned them over runoff concerns, so availability depends on where you live. If you can buy it and want maximum life between coats, it remains the traditional choice.

Asphalt emulsion sealers are the common alternative, water-based and far lower in odor and emissions. They are more forgiving to apply and safer around plants and pets, though they typically want recoating every two to three years. Most of what a home center stocks now falls in this category, often with polymer or sand additives that improve wear.

Acrylic sealers cost considerably more and are used where appearance matters or where the driveway is concrete rather than asphalt. Concrete and asphalt take entirely different products: an asphalt sealer on concrete will not bond properly, and a concrete sealer on asphalt is a waste of money. Confirm which surface you actually have before buying, since older concrete stained dark by traffic is mistaken for asphalt more often than you would expect.

Two thin coats, and when not to seal at all

Sealer fails from being applied too thick, not too thin. A heavy coat skins over on top while the underside stays soft, then cracks and peels in sheets within a season. Two thin coats, the second applied across the direction of the first once the first is dry to the touch, wear far better than one heavy pass and use roughly the same total material.

Conditions matter as much as technique. Seal when the pavement and air are above about 50 to 60 degrees and no rain is forecast for 24 to 48 hours, and avoid applying in direct midday sun on a hot surface, which flashes the water off before the sealer bonds. Keep traffic off for at least a day, and longer for the first hot weekend, because a car parked on green sealer leaves tire marks that do not come out.

There are times to skip it. New asphalt needs to cure for at least 90 days before its first seal, since sealing too early traps the oils that are still hardening. A driveway with structural cracks wider than about a quarter inch, potholes, or areas where the base has failed needs crack filling and patching first; sealer is a surface coating and will not bridge a moving crack or fix a soft spot underneath.

Do cracks need filling before sealing?

Yes. Sealer is a surface coating, not a crack filler; anything wider than a hairline needs rubberized crack filler first, and potholes need patch material. Sealing over open cracks just gives water a decorated path into the base, which is what actually destroys driveways.
