Interior surface materials come in fixed units: 4 x 8 drywall sheets, flooring boxes that cover about 20 square feet, buckets of joint compound. These calculators convert a room's dimensions into those units, including the finishing materials that are easy to forget on the first trip to the store.
Waste is the difference between an estimate that works and a second trip. Offcuts around doors, windows, outlets, and odd corners are rarely reusable, so each calculator applies a default waste factor of about 10% and tells you when to raise it: complex rooms and angled installs for drywall, diagonal or patterned layouts for flooring.
