How this is calculated
Wall area = total wall width x height, minus 21 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window. Rolls = area / usable coverage per roll, rounded up. Usable coverage assumes about 50 sq ft per double roll with a standard repeat and 44 sq ft with a large repeat.
Add up the width of every wall you plan to paper (the full perimeter for a whole room, or just one wall for an accent), enter the ceiling height and the openings, and this calculator converts the area into rolls. It works in usable coverage rather than raw roll size, because pattern matching wastes a meaningful fraction of every roll.
American wallpaper is priced by the single roll but almost always sold packaged as double rolls. A double roll contains 55 to 70 square feet of paper, but after trimming and matching a typical repeat you can count on roughly 50 usable square feet, and closer to 44 with a large repeat over 18 inches. When in doubt, choose the larger-repeat option and let the calculator be conservative.

Prepasted, paste-the-wall, and peel-and-stick
Prepasted papers have adhesive already on the back and are activated by soaking in a water tray. They are the traditional consumer product, inexpensive and widely available, and the messiest to hang because the wet paper needs to be booked, folded onto itself, while the paste activates.
Paste-the-wall materials are non-woven and dimensionally stable enough that the adhesive goes on the wall rather than the paper. The strips are hung dry, which is faster, cleaner, and much easier alone, and they generally strip off in whole sheets years later rather than shredding. If you have a choice, this is the easiest of the three to hang well.
Peel-and-stick is genuinely removable and suits rentals and accent walls, at the cost of a shorter life and fussier behavior on anything but a smooth, well-primed surface. It will not adhere reliably to textured walls or fresh paint, and it lifts at seams in humid rooms. All three types need a sound, smooth, primed wall; wallpaper hides nothing and telegraphs every defect beneath it.
Pattern repeat is what drives the waste
A plain or random-match paper wastes very little because strips can be cut sequentially. A patterned paper must be aligned strip to strip, and the vertical distance over which the pattern repeats determines how much gets trimmed from each one. A 21 inch repeat means each strip may waste up to 21 inches, and on a standard wall height that can approach a fifth of the roll.
Drop matches waste more than straight matches. In a straight match the pattern lines up at the same height on every strip; in a drop match alternate strips are offset by half the repeat, so you are effectively cutting from two sequences at once. Rolls are also sold as single or double, with a double roll being a continuous length that yields more usable strips than two singles of the same total area for exactly this reason.
Add roughly 15 percent for a patterned paper and closer to 10 for a random match, then buy every roll from the same run or batch number. Color shifts between production runs are common and clearly visible on adjacent strips, and a single extra roll bought later almost never matches.
Wall preparation and hanging order
Wallpaper needs a smooth, sealed, non-absorbent surface. Fill and sand every dent, then prime with a dedicated wallpaper primer or sizing rather than ordinary wall paint. Primer serves two purposes: it stops the wall drawing moisture out of the paste too quickly, and it makes removal possible later without tearing the drywall paper facing off with it.
Textured walls need skim coating flat first. Hanging paper over orange peel or knockdown texture produces a surface where every high point shows through as a shadow, and the paper bridges the hollows and eventually creases into them.
Start at a plumb line rather than a corner, because no corner in a house is truly plumb and an error there compounds around the room. Plan the sequence so the final seam, where the pattern inevitably fails to match, lands somewhere inconspicuous such as behind a door or above an entrance. Overlap and double-cut at inside corners rather than trying to wrap a strip around them.
Common questions
What is the difference between a single and double roll?
They are the same width of paper; a double roll is simply twice as long. In the US, prices are usually quoted per single roll but the product ships as double rolls, so a quote of $40 per single roll means $80 per physical roll. This trips up almost everyone budgeting their first wallpaper job.
Why does the pattern repeat matter?
Every strip must be cut so its pattern lines up with the strip beside it, and the paper trimmed off to achieve that is wasted. The larger the vertical repeat, the more waste per strip. A repeat over about 18 inches can cut a roll's usable coverage by 10 to 20 percent, which is why the calculator offers a large-repeat option.
Should I subtract doors and windows from the area?
Yes, but conservatively. This calculator uses standard allowances of 21 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window. For very large openings like sliding doors or picture windows, measure them and subtract the real area, but never subtract more than the openings actually cover.
Why do all rolls need to be from the same batch?
Wallpaper is printed in dye lots, and color can shift slightly between batches. Two rolls from different lots can look obviously mismatched side by side on a wall. Order everything at once, check the batch numbers on delivery, and order one spare roll for future repairs.
